Introduction
EasyRPG Player is a free reimplementation of the program that runs games made with RPG Maker 2000 and 2003, two game-making tools from the early 2000s that thousands of hobby games were built with. Its README: “EasyRPG Player is a game interpreter to play RPG Maker 2000, 2003 and EasyRPG games.” It is developed by the EasyRPG team, and its store listing adds: “This app is not affiliated with Kadokawa Corporation”, the publisher of RPG Maker.
Setting it up
The app asks for a folder of its own the first time you start it; you can’t use the Download folder. Inside it, EasyRPG looks for:
games/, with one folder or archive per game;rtp/2000andrtp/2003, for the Run-Time Package if your games need it;soundfonts/, for SF2 soundfonts that change how MIDI music sounds;fonts/, for other fonts.
Games stored as ZIP or LZH archives save their progress in a saves/ folder there. The wiki warns that reading game folders “can prove to be slow depending on the number of files”, because of the Android interface it has to use.
Controls and settings
- On-screen buttons, which you can add, move, remove and resize, with separate layouts for landscape and portrait, and a fast-forward button.
- Controllers, keyboards and mice work when connected. On the touchscreen, one, two and three fingers act as left, right and middle mouse clicks.
- Steam Controller over Bluetooth, which is why the app asks for Bluetooth.
- Version 0.8.1.1 fixed the detection of text encodings in ZIP and LZH archives on Android, now targets Android 16, and added a dark mode for the app’s menus.
What goes online
Nothing; the app has no internet permission. EasyRPG’s privacy policy: “Our software does not access the internet. All data is stored locally and never automatically transferred to us.” The bug report button opens your e-mail app with the log and your saves attached, addressed to the developers, and sends nothing until you do. The video guide link opens YouTube in your browser.
About this file
- This is the developers’ own build of version 0.8.1.1, downloaded from easyrpg.org. The downloads page gives 1 June 2025 as its release date; the file is dated the next day, which is the date shown above. Google Play has the same version. The website publishes no checksum or certificate fingerprint for it; we record the signer, a certificate the developers named “Nightly Build”, and require it for every update.
- The 31.8 MB file runs on Android 5.0 and later, on ARM and x86, 32- and 64-bit, and declares 4 permissions: Bluetooth, in its old and current form, for the Steam Controller, vibration, and one AndroidX adds for internal use. It uses Android’s folder picker instead of a storage permission.
- EasyRPG Player is licensed under the GPL-3.0 or later, and its logos under CC BY-SA 4.0. The fonts built into it are Shinonome (public domain), Baekmuk (Baekmuk licence), ttyp0 (ttyp0 licence) and WenQuanYi (GPL-2.0 or later with the font exception).
- The app’s own menus are translated into Brazilian Portuguese; the language inside a game is the game’s.
- The screenshots are from EasyRPG’s store listing. The game list shows freeware games, which EasyRPG doesn’t include.

Common questions
Is this APK the official EasyRPG Player release?
Yes. It is the file easyrpg.org offers for download, byte for byte. It is signed with the certificate we recorded when we first checked EasyRPG Player (SHA-256 eb2ee78f21a1a754def46db977cf1c97ad9c93df57798da930675546b493f95c); a release signed with a different key would not be published here.
What Android version does EasyRPG Player need?
Android 5.0 or later (API level 21). Version 0.8.1.1 is built for Android 16 (target API 36). Runs on 64-bit and older 32-bit ARM phones.
Can EasyRPG Player access the internet?
No. The APK doesn’t request Android’s internet permission, so the app can’t go online by itself. In total it declares 4 permissions, and 1 of them needs your approval first.
Does EasyRPG Player contain trackers?
No known trackers: our scan of version 0.8.1.1 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.
Is EasyRPG Player open source?
Yes. EasyRPG Player is released under the GPL-3.0-or-later licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/EasyRPG/Player.
Where do I get games?
EasyRPG includes none. Many RPG Maker 2000 and 2003 games are free from their creators: EasyRPG’s wiki points to itch.io, where games are tagged “made with EasyRPG” or “RPG Maker 2000”, to rpgmaker.net and to Steam. Put each game, unpacked or as a ZIP or LZH archive, in its own folder inside “games”; RAR, 7z and EXE files aren’t supported.
What is the RTP, and do I need it?
The Run-Time Package, shared graphics and sounds that some games expect. EasyRPG’s wiki: the installer “is given out by RPG Maker’s vendor at their homepage for anyone to download but not to share”, at rpgmakerweb.com. Put it in rtp/2000 or rtp/2003 and turn on RTP support; games that don’t need it run without.
Why is the F-Droid version so much older?
F-Droid still offers 0.6.2.3 from 2021, built and signed by F-Droid. A maintainer wrote: “There is a lack of maintainers for the fdroid-port unfortunately.” This file is the developers’ own 0.8.1.1, signed with another key, so uninstall F-Droid’s copy before installing it.
Does it run RPG Maker XP, VX, MV or MZ games?
No. The app: “EasyRPG Player is designed to support only RPG Maker 2000 and 2003 games, with no plans to expand to other engines.” It tells you which engine a game was made with when it can’t run it.
