Introduction

HyperRogue is “a puzzle roguelike in the hyperbolic plane”, written by Zeno Rogue. You play a lone adventurer who collects treasure and magical Orbs across many different lands, one move at a time. What sets it apart is the space itself: on a hyperbolic plane the number of cells grows exponentially with distance, so the world keeps opening up around you. The official site sums up the consequence: “how extremely unlikely is it to reach the same place twice, and how the world seems to be rotated when you do return”.

How it plays

  • Turn-based and tactical. Each land has its own monsters and rules: in the Icy Land your body heat melts the ice walls, and in the Living Cave the walls themselves can grow. Most fights are about positioning rather than statistics.
  • You can’t blunder into death. The game won’t let you make a move that gets you killed. In the words of the FAQ: “You will only die when ‘checkmated’, i.e. when ANY possible move would lead to your death.” Hardcore mode removes that safety net.
  • Don’t camp. The FAQ’s advice is to “pick your battles”, and it warns that “staying too long in one area WILL result in the Ivies overgrowing you!”
  • Special modes. Besides the normal game, the menu has a casual mode, a puzzle/exploration mode, Orb Strategy, pure tactics, the Yendor Challenge, multiplayer, a guided tour of the geometry and an option to experiment with other geometries.

The FAQ also has a fair warning: “If you feel dizziness or nausea, stop playing for a bit.”

Playing on a phone

The in-game help for mobile explains the controls: “Usually, you move by touching somewhere on the map; you can also touch one of the four buttons on the map corners to change this (to scroll the map or get information about map objects).” The Android code also passes the arrow keys, the numeric keypad and Enter to the game, so a hardware keyboard works too.

If the decorated floors make the tactics hard to read, the game offers several graphical styles: the default one inspired by M. C. Escher, a plain style, a “black” style, and ASCII characters for fans of classic roguelikes. The official gallery images below show more of the map than fits on a phone screen.

The racing mode is switched off in the mobile code, and the Strange Challenge exists only in the Steam version.

Free version, Gold and Steam

HyperRogue is open source under the GPL version 2, and the developer gives it away: the itch.io page offers “a free version for free”, and the README asks those who want to say thanks to buy a paid version “with more up-to-date content and some social and competitive features”. On itch.io, HyperRogue Gold for Android costs $2.49 or more, and the Steam version adds online achievements, leaderboards and trading cards. The open-source Android build has online achievements switched off in its code, and the developer notes that the code for connecting to those services isn’t published.

This page offers the free build only. If you enjoy the game, the paid versions on itch.io or Steam support its development.

About this file

  • This is F-Droid’s build, signed by F-Droid. The developer also posts a free Android APK on itch.io, signed with the developer’s own key, and the two can’t be installed over each other: uninstall one before installing the other, which removes your saved progress.
  • It is version 13.1e, which F-Droid added in September 2025. The desktop game has since moved on to 13.1o (August 2026). Answering a bug report, the developer pointed to a newer Android version “already on itch.io, I do not manage the version on f-droid”, and the itch.io APK we checked was labelled 13.1e but contained 13.1d, so neither Android build currently matches the desktop version.
  • The only permission is for a foreground service. The app can’t access the internet at all, and our scan found no trackers and no ad libraries.
  • The 36.9 MB file runs on 32- and 64-bit ARM and on x86, from Android 5.0.
  • The soundtrack is under the Creative Commons BY-SA 3.0 licence; the game’s credits name Shawn Parrotte and Will Savino among the composers. The gallery images are from the official site, which says they are “in public domain”.

Common questions

Is this APK the official HyperRogue release?

It is F-Droid’s build rather than the developer’s own: F-Droid compiled HyperRogue 13.1e from the published source code and signed it with its own key. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index. Because the key is F-Droid’s, it won’t install over a copy from Google Play or GitHub without uninstalling first.

What Android version does HyperRogue need?

Android 5.0 or later (API level 21). Version 13.1e is built for Android 15 (target API 35). Runs on 64-bit and older 32-bit ARM phones.

Can HyperRogue access the internet?

No. The APK doesn’t request Android’s internet permission, so the app can’t go online by itself. In total it declares 1 permission, and none of them needs your approval first.

Does HyperRogue contain trackers?

No known trackers: our scan of version 13.1e found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.

Is HyperRogue open source?

Yes. HyperRogue is released under the GPL-2.0-only licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/zenorogue/hyperrogue.

Why isn’t HyperRogue on Google Play any more?

The developer’s download page says it was on Google Play as HyperRogue, HyperRogue Lite and HyperRogue Gold, “but Google Play recently introduced restrictions (based on some EU law) which are not friendly to small developers -- they require the developers to post information about themselves. As a result, HyperRogue is no longer there.” For Android, the developer now points to F-Droid and itch.io.

Is this HyperRogue Gold?

No. This is F-Droid’s free build of the open-source code. HyperRogue Gold for Android is sold on the developer’s itch.io page (https://zenorogue.itch.io/hyperrogue) for $2.49 or more, and buying it, or the Steam version, is how the developer asks to be supported. Online achievements and leaderboards are not part of the open-source Android build.

My progress disappears when I switch apps. What can I do?

On some phones the system closes HyperRogue in the background before it can save. An open report from a Realme owner says it “doesn’t save progress when minimizing the app or locking the screen”, and a contributor replied: “This is a known issue with Realme phones”, pointing to the workarounds at https://dontkillmyapp.com/realme, which are about letting the app keep running in the background.
