Introduction
Endless Sky is a 2D game about flying a starship. Its own site compares it to the Escape Velocity series: you explore star systems, earn money by trading, carrying passengers or taking missions, and spend it on a better ship or better weapons and engines. There is a long main storyline, but the README says you can ignore it and play as a merchant, bounty hunter or explorer instead.
An unofficial port
The Endless Sky project publishes its own builds on GitHub, Steam, GOG and Flathub, all for desktop computers. This Android version is a separate fork by the GitHub user thewierdnut; its README says it sets out to “add android support, as well as touchscreen and user interface updates”. He also contributes to the original game and is listed in its credits. The original project knows about the port and links to it from its bug-report page as the place for “issues related to the mobile port”, but its website and README don’t offer it as a download.
On a touchscreen
From the port’s changelogs:
- Double-tap to fire the afterburners, pinch to zoom, and an optional on-screen joystick, added after users said that steering by tapping empty space is hard on a big tablet.
- Small round buttons and radial menus in place of desktop keyboard shortcuts, and a pause button.
- Gamepad support since build 38, and mouse input.
The game runs in landscape only and needs a GPU with OpenGL ES 3.0.
Known issues in this build
Open in the port’s issue tracker when we checked: installing plugins fails in build 61 (#181), the ship information panel doesn’t scroll on some phones (#182), and exporting can write an empty file (#152). The author also says the existing documentation of the controls is wrong (#148).
What goes online
Nothing. The app declares no permissions at all, not even internet access, so it can’t connect anywhere. Plugins are added by importing files you have downloaded yourself. The game is in English only, as is the desktop version.
About this file
- This is F-Droid’s build, compiled from the port’s source code and signed with F-Droid’s key. The port’s GitHub page also has APKs, but those are automatic test builds signed with a development key, marked as pre-releases with the note “Dont expect it to work reliably”. The two can’t be installed over each other.
- The 92.5 MB file runs on Android 5.0 and later on ARM phones and tablets, 32- and 64-bit; there is no x86 version.
- The code is under the GPL (version 3 or later, according to the source files). Most of the art and sound is under Creative Commons licences or in the public domain; a set of landscape photos is under the Unsplash licence, which allows redistribution but not selling unaltered copies. The details are in the game’s copyright file.

Common questions
Is this APK the official Endless Sky release?
It is F-Droid’s build rather than the developer’s own: F-Droid compiled Endless Sky 0.11.1-61 from the published source code and signed it with its own key. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index. Because the key is F-Droid’s, it won’t install over a copy from Google Play or GitHub without uninstalling first.
What Android version does Endless Sky need?
Android 5.0 or later (API level 21). Version 0.11.1-61 is built for Android 13 (target API 33). Runs on 64-bit and older 32-bit ARM phones.
Can Endless Sky access the internet?
No. The APK doesn’t request Android’s internet permission, so the app can’t go online by itself. In total it declares 0 permissions, and none of them needs your approval first.
Does Endless Sky contain trackers?
No known trackers: our scan of version 0.11.1-61 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.
Is Endless Sky open source?
Yes. Endless Sky is released under the GPL-3.0-only licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/thewierdnut/endless-mobile.
Is this the official Endless Sky for Android?
No. The Endless Sky project releases the game for Windows, macOS and Linux. This port comes from thewierdnut, who also contributes to the original game; the original project sends Android bug reports to his repository, and one of its members calls it the “unofficial mobile port”.
Which version of the game does it contain?
Version 0.11.1-61 carries Endless Sky 0.11.2, the original game’s current stable release, despite the 0.11.1 in its name: the changelog for this build says “Pull upstream 0.11.2”. The original project has since put out 0.11.3 as an unstable release.
