Introduction
Mindustry calls itself a sandbox tower-defense game. You mine resources, move them along conveyor belts into factories, and turn them into ammunition, buildings and units to hold off waves of enemies and attack theirs. The campaign spans two planets, Serpulo and Erekir, with hand-made maps and generated sectors, and there are co-op, PvP and sandbox modes for multiplayer.
Playing online with F-Droid’s build
Every Mindustry build reports a type when it joins a game: the developer’s own builds say “official”, and F-Droid’s build recipe sets “fdroid”. A dedicated server compares the two and turns away a different type unless its operator has switched on custom clients, which is off by default on dedicated servers. So expect public servers to show “This server is not compatible with your build type.” The developer’s view, in a 2023 issue about exactly this: “This is a bug in the F-Droid build scripts, which I did not set up and do not maintain.” F-Droid’s current recipe still sets the type.
What still works: playing on your own, and games that a player hosts from inside Mindustry, which accept other builds by default. If public servers matter to you, the developer’s own builds are the ones to use; see below for why they can’t simply update this one.
Mods
Mindustry has a built-in mod browser, which lists mods published on GitHub. Mods made of assets and scripts work on Android; mods written in Java don’t load on recent Android versions, and the game says so plainly: “This will not be fixed. There is no known workaround for this issue.”
What goes online
- At startup the game downloads the list of community servers, from GitHub or the jsDelivr CDN. A setting, Fetch Community Server List, turns this off; it is on by default.
- The mod browser fetches its list and the mods from GitHub.
- The update checker only exists in the developer’s bleeding-edge builds, and not on mobile, so this build doesn’t check for updates.
- Crash reports are not sent anywhere; the game asks you to report the crash yourself.
- There is no account, and our scan found no tracker libraries.
About this file
- This is F-Droid’s build of version 160.5, compiled from source and signed with F-Droid’s key. The developer’s builds on Google Play and itch.io aren’t signed with F-Droid’s key, so neither can install over this one, or this one over them, without uninstalling first (export your saves before switching). His GitHub releases have no APK, only desktop and server files; the automatic “bleeding-edge” APKs are development builds.
- The 78.5 MB file runs on Android 5.0 and later, on ARM and x86, 32- and 64-bit. It declares 3 permissions: internet access and the two old storage permissions.
- The game includes a Portuguese (Brazil) translation. The code is under GPL-3.0; the project doesn’t state a separate licence for its art and sound.

Common questions
Is this APK the official Mindustry release?
It is F-Droid’s build rather than the developer’s own: F-Droid compiled Mindustry 8-fdroid-160.5 from the published source code and signed it with its own key. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index. Because the key is F-Droid’s, it won’t install over a copy from Google Play or GitHub without uninstalling first.
What Android version does Mindustry need?
Android 5.0 or later (API level 21). Version 8-fdroid-160.5 is built for Android 16 (target API 36). Runs on 64-bit and older 32-bit ARM phones.
Can Mindustry access the internet?
Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 3 permissions, and 2 of them need your approval first.
Does Mindustry contain trackers?
No known trackers: our scan of version 8-fdroid-160.5 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.
Is Mindustry open source?
Yes. Mindustry is released under the GPL-3.0-or-later licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/Anuken/Mindustry.
Can I play online with this version?
Partly. F-Droid builds Mindustry with its build type set to “fdroid”. Dedicated servers refuse a different build type unless their operator allows custom clients, which is off by default; you see “This server is not compatible with your build type.” Games a player hosts from inside the game accept other builds by default. The developer has said F-Droid should not set this build type (issue #9403).
Is Mindustry free?
Yes, on Google Play, on F-Droid and here. On itch.io the developer sells it at a price you choose, with an Android APK among the files, and on Steam it is a paid release.
Does it work with a controller or on Android TV?
No. The developer lists controller support among the suggestions not to make (“this has already been attempted and does not work well with Mindustry”) and has said that “Mindustry doesn't support Android TV.”
