Introduction

Brogue is “a single-player strategy game set in the halls of a mysterious and randomly-generated dungeon”, where the goal is to retrieve the Amulet of Yendor from the 26th level. It was created by Brian Walker; Brogue: Community Edition (Brogue CE) is the community’s continuation of it. This app is a third-party Android port of Brogue CE 1.15.1, currently the latest Brogue CE release.

What the port changes

  • A title screen you just tap to start, and the dungeon drawn at 2× size for a phone screen. The zoom is fixed; the developer said “I locked it to 2x to best support mobile”.
  • Movement by swipe or on-screen d-pad, chosen in the settings; two fingers drag the map. A tap acts as a click, and a long press inspects a cell.
  • An Android menu overlay with a mouse toggle and an inventory screen, and a sidebar you can move to the left or right side.
  • One save slot, kept in the app’s private storage.

It is made for touch and plays in landscape. Asked about Fire TV, the developer replied that it is “strictly a port meant to get away from the ‘mouse + keyboard’ with a focus on being mobile-friendly”, so it isn’t built for TVs or controllers.

About this file

  • This is the developer’s own build, distributed through F-Droid, which rebuilt it from the source code and confirmed it matched (certificate CN=tyrannotorus). It isn’t on Google Play.
  • The game needs nothing downloaded after installing: its graphics are inside the APK.
  • The code is under AGPL-3.0 or later, and the tiles under CC BY-SA 4.0. F-Droid flags no anti-features.
  • The interface is in English only.
  • The 13.2 MB file runs on Android 7.0 and later, on 32- and 64-bit ARM and 64-bit x86, and declares 2 permissions, both for network access. Our scan found no trackers.

Common questions

Is this APK the official Brogue CE Android release?

Yes. It is the developer-signed release of Brogue CE Android 1.15.1.23 that F-Droid distributes, which F-Droid publishes only when its own build from the source code reproduces it. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index, and it is signed with the developer’s certificate (SHA-256 bb8f7d9d0ba011057a1e76cae2df4430d8d5b439b3b10e44c631bdfb0ab1ae41).

What Android version does Brogue CE Android need?

Android 7.0 or later (API level 24). Version 1.15.1.23 is built for Android 15 (target API 35). Runs on 64-bit and older 32-bit ARM phones.

Can Brogue CE Android access the internet?

Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 2 permissions, and none of them needs your approval first.

Does Brogue CE Android contain trackers?

No known trackers: our scan of version 1.15.1.23 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.

Is Brogue CE Android open source?

Yes. Brogue CE Android is released under the AGPL-3.0-or-later licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/tyrannotorus/c-brogue-ce-android.

Who makes this Android version?

A developer called tyrannotorus, not the Brogue: Community Edition team. The port’s README says: “You may play it. It is unsupported. Pull requests welcome.” It also calls the project “human-directed as far as top-down architecture but 100% slop-coded”. Brogue CE’s own README links to a different, older Android port, whose last release was in 2023.

Does it send anything online?

Not unless you turn it on. The app has an “Enable Server” setting, off by default; the code says builds must make “zero network calls to our server until the user enables it.” When enabled, it sends an install ID based on the phone’s Android ID, the game’s seed, outcome, depth, turn count and app version to the developer’s server at werewolf.camp.
