Introduction
The Battle for Wesnoth is a turn-based strategy game with a high-fantasy setting, played on a hex map. You recruit and level up units and lead them through single-player campaigns, or fight other players online or on the same device. It has been developed in the open since 2003, and the engine can be extended with its own scripting languages.
An alpha, and the only Android version
The project keeps two branches: 1.18, the stable one, and 1.19, where development happens. The Android port only exists for 1.19. The app’s own description calls this build “an alpha release of the 1.19 in-development branch”, and the website is blunt about development versions: “New players are advised to choose the stable version instead”, and updates “may include game-breaking changes.” On Android there is no stable version to choose, and the project’s website links its Android download to F-Droid’s build of 1.19.
F-Droid’s update rule only picks up development-branch versions, so this listing should keep following 1.19 and later development branches.
First start: the game data
The APK is only the engine. The first time it runs, it reads a manifest on SourceForge and downloads the game data from there: for 1.19.28, a core data package and a music package, together about 0.6 GB. Allow for that before you start on mobile data. Without a connection you see “Gamedata is missing, please download it to proceed (requires network).” There is also an Install Gamedata ZIP option in the settings for installing the data from a file.
On a touchscreen
The project’s Android notes explain the touch controls: tap a unit to select it, and long-press any hex to open the menu that the desktop version puts on the right mouse button, with recruiting and recalling. The developers say the alpha works best on a tablet with a large screen. The game runs in landscape only, and it doesn’t support gamepads.
What goes online
- SourceForge, where the app checks the data manifest at startup and downloads the game data.
- server.wesnoth.org, the multiplayer lobby, when you play online.
- add-ons.wesnoth.org, the add-on server for user-made campaigns and content, when you browse it.
Single-player campaigns don’t need the multiplayer or add-on servers. Our scan found no tracker libraries.
About this file
- This is F-Droid’s build of version 1.19.28, signed with F-Droid’s key. The project also uploads its own Android APKs to SourceForge, signed with its key; the two can’t install over each other without uninstalling first.
- The 59.1 MB file is the 64-bit ARM build and needs Android 6.0 or later. F-Droid publishes a separate 32-bit ARM build, which isn’t hosted here. It declares 4 permissions, including internet access for the data download.
- The code is under GPL-2.0 or later. Most art and music is under GPL-2.0 or later as well; newer contributions are under CC BY-SA 4.0.

Common questions
Is this APK the official The Battle for Wesnoth release?
It is F-Droid’s build rather than the developer’s own: F-Droid compiled The Battle for Wesnoth 1.19.28 from the published source code and signed it with its own key. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index. Because the key is F-Droid’s, it won’t install over a copy from Google Play or GitHub without uninstalling first.
What Android version does The Battle for Wesnoth need?
Android 6.0 or later (API level 23). Version 1.19.28 is built for Android 15 (target API 35). Needs a 64-bit ARM phone; 32-bit-only devices are not supported.
Can The Battle for Wesnoth access the internet?
Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 4 permissions, and 2 of them need your approval first.
Does The Battle for Wesnoth contain trackers?
No known trackers: our scan of version 1.19.28 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.
Is The Battle for Wesnoth open source?
Yes. The Battle for Wesnoth is released under the GPL-2.0-or-later licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/wesnoth/wesnoth.
Why is the Android version labelled alpha?
Wesnoth’s Android port exists only for the 1.19 development branch; the project’s README says “The Android port is available for 1.19 only (alpha)”. Its website advises new players to choose the stable version, 1.18, which has no official Android build, and warns that development updates “may include game-breaking changes.”
Why does it download data the first time?
The APK holds only the engine. On first start it fetches the game data from the project’s files on SourceForge: core data and music, together about 0.6 GB for version 1.19.28. Without a connection it stops at “Gamedata is missing, please download it to proceed (requires network).” The settings can also install the data from a ZIP file.
Will it run well on my phone?
This file needs Android 6.0 and a 64-bit ARM processor. The developers say the alpha works best on a tablet with plenty of screen space. It runs in landscape only, and there is no gamepad support: the engine dropped it in version 1.15.2.
