Introduction
Shattered Pixel Dungeon describes itself as “a traditional roguelike dungeon crawler with randomized levels and enemies, and hundreds of items to collect and use”. You choose one of six heroes and work your way down a dungeon whose layout, monsters and loot change every game; when you die, the run is over. It is based on Pixel Dungeon by Watabou and made by one developer, Evan Debenham, under the name Shattered Pixel. The project says it wants the game to be “free of ads and invasive microtransactions”.
What goes online
The game itself is single-player and needs no connection. Two optional features use the internet, and how they start out depends on which app installed the game:
- Update checks ask GitHub for new releases. They are turned off when F-Droid, Droid-ify or Uptodown installed the game, since those update it themselves. If you install this file from a browser, they are on.
- News: the title screen can show the developer’s news feed from shatteredpixel.com. It starts off when F-Droid or Droid-ify installed the game, because F-Droid counts automatic news checks as an anti-feature, and on otherwise.
- Check for news always has a switch in the settings; Check for updates appears only when the built-in update check is active. A shared Only check on WiFi setting is on by default.
Controls and screens
Touch is the main input, and the game picks a layout to suit the screen size. Game controllers work too: the left stick moves your hero and the right stick moves an on-screen pointer, with a Controller Bindings screen in the settings once a controller is connected. Keyboard settings appear the same way. It doesn’t list itself as an Android TV app.
Saves
Android’s own backup is allowed to save your settings, rankings, badges and journal, but not a run in progress, “to prevent cheating”, as the code puts it. Cloud sync between devices is a Google Play feature and isn’t in this build.
About this file
- This is the developer’s own build, distributed through F-Droid. F-Droid rebuilt it from the source code, confirmed it matched, and publishes it with the developer’s signature (certificate CN=Evan Debenham). F-Droid also offers its own copy signed with its key; that one can’t update this one, or the other way round.
- The code is under GPL-3.0, and F-Droid flags no anti-features.
- The Portuguese translation is complete, though marked as not yet reviewed; it is the one Brazilian phones get.
- The 30.3 MB file runs on Android 5.0 and later, on ARM and x86, 32- and 64-bit, and declares 4 permissions. Our scan found no trackers, no ad libraries and no Google Play billing code.

Common questions
Is this APK the official Shattered Pixel Dungeon release?
Yes. It is the developer-signed release of Shattered Pixel Dungeon 4.0.0 that F-Droid distributes, which F-Droid publishes only when its own build from the source code reproduces it. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index, and it is signed with the developer’s certificate (SHA-256 d45f760b89608b4b253a3b160dc2707f1ff4e8dd8ca4d2e8e1b81c2c72d81753).
What Android version does Shattered Pixel Dungeon need?
Android 5.0 or later (API level 21). Version 4.0.0 is built for Android 16 (target API 36). Runs on 64-bit and older 32-bit ARM phones.
Can Shattered Pixel Dungeon access the internet?
Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 4 permissions, and none of them needs your approval first.
Does Shattered Pixel Dungeon contain trackers?
No known trackers: our scan of version 4.0.0 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.
Is Shattered Pixel Dungeon open source?
Yes. Shattered Pixel Dungeon is released under the GPL-3.0-only licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/00-Evan/shattered-pixel-dungeon.
Is this the same as the Google Play version?
It is the same game from the same developer, minus the store extras. The Google Play build adds Play Games sync and in-game supporter purchases, and the developer’s privacy policy says data collection (Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics) is only present in the Google Play and App Store versions. This open-source build has none of that; its “Support the Game” screen links to Patreon instead.
How do I update it?
When it isn’t installed by F-Droid, Droid-ify or Uptodown (for example, when you install this file from a browser), the game checks the project’s GitHub releases and tells you when a new version is out; the button opens the release page. The developer’s “Android” APK there is signed with the same key as this file, so it installs over it and keeps your progress. The separate “GPlay” APK is the Google Play build.
