Introduction
Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup (DCSS) is “a game of dungeon exploration, combat and magic, involving characters of diverse skills, worshipping deities of great power and caprice”, in the project’s words. You combine one of many species with a background, explore a randomly generated dungeon, and look for the Orb of Zot; death is permanent. A development team has worked on it for many years, and the Android version is built from the same repository as the desktop game.
Playing on a phone
The app is the tiles (graphical) version. Its launcher sets up how you play:
- On-screen keyboard: off, a classic keyboard, a transparent one drawn over the game, or the Android keyboard, with an adjustable size.
- Extra directional pad in a corner of your choice.
- The back key works as Escape, two fingers scroll menus, and the volume keys zoom the dungeon and the map.
- It also appears on Android TV, where it warns that you need a keyboard, a mouse or a touch screen to play.
Files and settings
The launcher has three extras that desktop players will recognise: Edit Init File for the game’s options file, Morgue Files to read (and download) the record of each finished character, and Mods, which “override game data resources”. Saves live in the app’s own storage folder.
About this file
- This is F-Droid’s build, compiled from the source code and signed with F-Droid’s key. The version on Google Play, which the official download page links to, is published by Medrano83, so the two can’t update each other without uninstalling first.
- Not to be confused with the older “Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup for Android” on F-Droid (com.crawlmb), which its author describes as an unofficial ASCII port.
- The app requests no internet access; our scan of its code found no servers it would contact.
- The code is under GPL-2.0 or later; most of the tiles are CC0. F-Droid flags no anti-features.
- Portuguese is only partly translated: the game falls back to English for text without a translation, and you switch it on with
language = ptin the init file. The launcher itself is English only. - The 60.0 MB file runs on Android 5.0 and later, on ARM and x86, 32- and 64-bit, and declares 2 permissions.
