Introduction
SuperTuxKart is “a 3D open-source arcade racer with a variety of characters, tracks, and modes to play”. It has 21 official tracks and 18 karts, with modes from normal races, time trials and Grand Prix to battles, soccer, egg hunts and follow-the-leader, plus a story mode. The project describes it as free “without any kind of active ads or microtransactions”. Its characters include Tux, the Linux mascot, and mascots of other open-source projects.
New in 1.5
Version 1.5, released in October 2025, brought graphical improvements, new soccer fields and egg hunts, six new themes, a benchmark mode and interface improvements. The Android controls also got fixes, such as the rescue button no longer staying active after you let go.
Playing on Android
- On first start you choose how to steer: accelerometer, gyroscope or an on-screen steering wheel, with optional automatic acceleration.
- Game controllers work, and it appears on the Android TV launcher, where it skips the touch setup.
- To keep phones smooth, it renders below full resolution by default and uses smaller textures.
- An optional download, Install full game assets under Options › General, adds high-quality textures and music. The game warns that this uses mobile data if you’re not on Wi-Fi; the package is about 0.2 GB, from the project’s GitHub releases.
What goes online
- Nothing until you allow it: the first-run question about internet access defaults to no, which the code notes is for GDPR compliance.
- With it on, the game downloads add-ons and news from online.supertuxkart.net. The privacy policy says the project collects anonymous information about which add-ons were downloaded.
- Online races use community-hosted servers, some of them recommended by the game, and need an STK account. You can also host your own server.
- Sending hardware statistics is off by default, and 1.5 doesn’t show a switch for it.

Common questions
Is this APK the official SuperTuxKart release?
Yes. It is the file from the project’s 1.5 release on GitHub, byte for byte, and it matches the SHA-256 checksum GitHub publishes for it. It is signed with the certificate we recorded when we first checked SuperTuxKart (SHA-256 326b6dc20bfee3eda6bf25624e164a2a266e3f7a094d6fded99dda29da92f8bb); a release signed with a different key would not be published here.
What Android version does SuperTuxKart need?
Android 5.0 or later (API level 21). Version 1.5 is built for Android 15 (target API 35). Runs on 64-bit and older 32-bit ARM phones.
Can SuperTuxKart access the internet?
Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 5 permissions, and 2 of them need your approval first.
Does SuperTuxKart contain trackers?
No known trackers: our scan of version 1.5 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.
Why is this version newer than F-Droid’s?
F-Droid builds SuperTuxKart itself and is still at version 1.4 from 2022: its build of 1.5 gets stuck compiling one of the game’s dependencies, an issue that is still open. This file is the official 1.5 APK from the project’s GitHub releases. It is signed by the developer rather than by F-Droid, so it can’t update F-Droid’s copy, or the other way round, without uninstalling first.
Do I need an account?
Only for racing over the internet. Single races, story mode, battles and local network games work without one. On first start the game asks whether it may connect to the internet to download add-ons and notify you of updates; the default answer is no, and you can change it later under Options › General › Connect to the Internet.
