Rat King Pixel Dungeon 2

RKPD2 is a modification of Shattered Pixel Dungeon by a single developer, Zrp200. From the README: “First released on April 1 2021, this fork is all about introducing more power to the game. The King, a one-off character in Pixel Dungeon already, debuts here as a playable hero whose power is unmatched.” It is “Forked from the source code of Shattered Pixel Dungeon by 00-Evan, inspired by Rat King Dungeon by the same author.” Its welcome screen explains the idea: people complained that Shattered was too hard, so the developer made a mod to solve it.

The game itself works as in Shattered Pixel Dungeon: a turn-based roguelike with random floors and permanent death. Our review of Shattered Pixel Dungeon describes what players say about it.

What 3.0 brought

Version 3.0, from June 2025, follows Shattered Pixel Dungeon up to its version 3.0: “With this update, RKPD2 implements up to Shattered v3.0, adding the Cleric to its list of classes and giving heavy buffs across the board! Sniper buffs are, of course, included.” In the in-game changelog: the Cleric with stronger spells and two new talents for each of its subclasses, changes to the Gladiator, and Shattered’s additions from its versions 2.4 to 3.0, such as trinkets.

It is based on Shattered Pixel Dungeon 3.0.2, so it doesn’t have what Shattered added later, such as the vault quest of version 4.0.

What goes online

Two features inherited from Shattered Pixel Dungeon use the internet, both on by default and both with a switch in the Connectivity settings:

• News: the title screen shows posts from Shattered Pixel Dungeon’s own blog at shatteredpixel.com, not news about RKPD2.
• Update check: the game asks GitHub for RKPD2’s releases.

By default both run only on Wi-Fi or another unmetered connection, at most once an hour, when the title screen opens. From the code, the update check RKPD2 inherited skips normal releases unless you include betas, so it probably never announces a new version; Shattered fixed this in its 3.1, which RKPD2 doesn’t include. If the game crashes, it shows the error log with buttons to copy, share, save or email it; nothing is sent by itself. There are no ads, analytics or Google libraries.

About this file

• This is the developer’s 3.0.1 APK from his GitHub release of 1 June 2025, the latest version. It is signed with his key (CN=Zachary Perlmutter), the same one since version 1.0.0. The password of that key is written in the project’s public build file, but the key file itself isn’t in the repository or its history, so the password alone doesn’t let anyone sign updates.
• RKPD2 is only on GitHub; it isn’t on Google Play, F-Droid or IzzyOnDroid.
• The last change was in June 2025. Two crash reports on 3.0.1 are open without a reply: reopening the settings after visiting the audio tab, and the alchemy section of the journal with thrown weapons.
• The 30.2 MB file runs on Android 4.0 and later, on ARM and x86, 32- and 64-bit. It declares 5 permissions: internet and network state, for the news and update check; vibration; storage, for saving crash logs; and reading system logs, which no code uses and which Android doesn’t grant to ordinary apps. Our scan found no trackers.
• The only screenshot is the welcome screen of an early version, from the project’s README; there are no others.
• RKPD2 is licensed under the GPL-3.0, like Shattered Pixel Dungeon, whose music, sound effects and most graphics it uses unchanged and credits in the game. It adds a Rat King sprite, a statue and edits of Shattered’s interface images, and a splash painting of the Rat King. The painting is credited to Prolich Art, but the commit that added it says only “Rat King now has splash art couresty of the internet. todo: add credit”, and no licence or permission is stated. CPU types in this build: arm64-v8a (64-bit ARM, almost every phone since 2017); armeabi; armeabi-v7a (32-bit ARM, older and budget phones); x86 (32-bit Intel, emulators); x86_64 (64-bit Intel, emulators and Chromebooks).
