Introduction
Cataclysm: Bright Nights (BN) describes itself in its README as “a roguelike with sci-fi elements set in a post-apocalyptic world”, and adds: “Cataclysm: Bright Nights is a fork of Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead.” It split from Cataclysm: DDA in May 2020, at the revision “just before pockets”, and has been developed separately by its own community since. Version 0.13.0, from September 2026, is the current stable release.
How it differs from DDA
- A way to win: the game has end-game goals, where DDA is open-ended.
- Lua mods: mods can run Lua scripts, in a sandbox without file or system access.
- Bundled mod packs: since 0.13, the APK includes nine packs from the game’s mod registry, which you enable per world.
- Older foundations: BN left DDA before several of its later systems, such as pockets for containers, so the two games now play differently, and mods are written for one or the other.
Like DDA, it is a deep, turn-based game made for keyboards first; expect a learning curve on a phone.
Offline
The app declares no internet permission, so it can’t go online at all. Crashes are written to a local log. The only link to the outside is a Bug report entry in the debug menu, which opens a GitHub page in your browser with your settings filled in, and only when you choose it.
About this file
- This is the developers’ own stable release 0.13.0, the 64-bit build without the sound pack (
cbn-android-x64-no-soundpack) from the project’s GitHub page. The other build is identical apart from the Otopack sounds and is about 189 megabytes larger. - It is signed with the project’s release key, the same on every release we checked since 2021; the key and its password are kept in the project’s private build settings. A debug key with a public password in the repository signs only test builds of pull requests.
- The project also publishes nightly builds, marked as pre-releases, with the same package name and key; this site hosts stable releases only. Bright Nights isn’t on Google Play, F-Droid or IzzyOnDroid.
- The 282.8 MB file runs on 64-bit ARM phones with Android 10 or later and Vulkan 1.1. It declares four permissions: all-files access and the older storage permissions, for the Documents folder used by default, and vibration. Every release so far has the same internal version code, 1, so updates are told apart by their version name.
- Bright Nights is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 licence, the Magical Nights mod under CC BY-SA 4.0, and its fonts are Unifont and Terminus under their own free licences. Of the bundled mod packs, Overhaul, Otopack’s mods and Medieval Mod Reborn have no licence file in their repositories, and Overhaul’s author writes, “I (@scarf005) do not own assets of overhaul”. As in DDA, the LARWICK map font and some tree sprites from OpenGameArt have no licence stated.
- The project publishes no Android screenshots, so the picture here is the desktop collage from its README.

Common questions
Is this APK the official Cataclysm: Bright Nights release?
Yes. It is the file from the project’s v0.13.0 release on GitHub, byte for byte, and it matches the SHA-256 checksum GitHub publishes for it. It is signed with the certificate we recorded when we first checked Cataclysm: Bright Nights (SHA-256 b0d7645332eb0a2b940bf3a2c1386d04ddf9bb2f5c7f64a2a8fe11c46e47799c); a release signed with a different key would not be published here.
What Android version does Cataclysm: Bright Nights need?
Android 10 or later (API level 29). Version v0.13.0 is built for Android 13 (target API 33). Needs a 64-bit ARM phone; 32-bit-only devices are not supported.
Can Cataclysm: Bright Nights access the internet?
No. The APK doesn’t request Android’s internet permission, so the app can’t go online by itself. In total it declares 4 permissions, and 2 of them need your approval first.
Does Cataclysm: Bright Nights contain trackers?
No known trackers: our scan of version v0.13.0 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.
Is Cataclysm: Bright Nights open source?
Its code is. The source code of Cataclysm: Bright Nights is released under the CC-BY-SA-3.0 licence and published at https://github.com/cataclysmbn/Cataclysm-BN. A few bundled assets have no licence stated: the LARWICK map font, some tree sprites from OpenGameArt and the graphics of three bundled mod packs, Overhaul, Otopack and Medieval Mod Reborn.
Where are my saves, and are they lost if I uninstall?
By default in the Documents/cataclysm-bn folder of your phone’s storage, which uninstalling the app normally leaves alone. With the launcher’s “Use Legacy Storage” option on, they go to the app’s own folder (Android/data/…) instead, which Android normally deletes when you uninstall, so back them up first. Cataclysm: DDA keeps its saves in the app’s own folder too.
Why does it ask for access to all files?
To use that Documents folder. On Android 11 and later the launcher sends you to the system’s all-files access page before the game starts; its settings screen has a “Use Legacy Storage” option that skips this, but then the game keeps its files in the app’s own folder, which uninstalling normally removes.
Can I install it next to Cataclysm: DDA?
Yes. They have different package names and keys, so both install side by side, each with its own saves.
Why is there no music or ambient sound?
We host the build without the Otopack sound pack, which is otherwise the default. That pack, by its maker’s own account, uses sounds and music he doesn’t own, including a few from Valve’s Half-Life games. Without it the game uses its basic sound pack, which has only menu sounds; you can add a sound pack yourself, in the sound folder next to your saves.
