Introduction

If you install apps from outside Google Play, nothing tells you when they have updates. APKUpdater fills that gap. It checks your installed apps against several sources at once and tells you when a newer version exists. It is a rewrite (the 3.x branch) of a long-running open-source project.

Where it looks

  • APKMirror
  • Aptoide
  • F-Droid
  • GitHub releases

You can also search those sources for new apps to install.

What it does

  • Background update checks on a schedule, with a notification when something new is found.
  • Direct install of updates from sources that allow it.
  • Silent updates on Android 12+. The build declares UPDATE_PACKAGES_WITHOUT_USER_ACTION, the permission Android 12 introduced for installers to update apps without a confirmation each time.
  • Root install, if you have root.
  • Android TV support, and Material You theming on Android 12+.

What stands out in the APK

This is the part to read before installing.

  • IzzyOnDroid flags APKUpdater for two anti-features: NonFreeNet and Tracking.
    • NonFreeNet means it relies on proprietary network services. APKMirror and Aptoide are exactly that, so the flag fits how the app works.
    • Tracking is harder to pin down. The project’s own description says “No ads. No tracking,” and our scan found no code matching any Exodus tracker signature. A code scan can’t see everything. Talking to third-party services can also count as tracking. IzzyOnDroid’s flag doesn’t say which it means, and we couldn’t confirm it either way.
  • Ten permissions. Notifications asks first. Install unknown apps is a special permission you grant yourself. The rest are ordinary permissions for network access, background work and starting at boot.
  • Android 6.0 or newer. The description says Android 5 is supported, but this build declares Android 6.0 as its minimum.

Who it’s for

APKUpdater suits you if your apps come from a mix of places and you want one list of available updates. If you would rather update only from each app’s own releases, with no store in between, compare it with Obtainium in our app updater comparison.
