Introduction

aShell You lets you type ADB and shell commands on the phone itself, the kind you would normally send from a computer with adb shell. It started in 2024 as a Material You redesign of aShell, another developer’s app, and changed its package name soon after to avoid confusion with the original.

Where commands run

  • On this phone, through Shizuku, root or wireless debugging. We found the Shizuku library in the APK.
  • On another Android device, connected with an OTG cable or over wireless debugging. For that, your own phone doesn’t need Shizuku or root.

Features

From the project’s README:

  • Long-running commands such as logcat, top or watch, with search in the output, and saving or sharing it as text.
  • Bookmarks for commands you use often.
  • A simple file manager built on ADB push and pull.
  • Local backup and restore of the app’s data.

On the roadmap: fastboot support is in progress, and an interactive shell is planned.

Good to know

  • The original aShell is still developed. On Google Play it is a paid app, and its developer invites people to build it themselves for free. aShell You isn’t on Google Play.
  • This file is the developer’s F-Droid flavour from GitHub, delivered through IzzyOnDroid and signed with the developer’s own key, the same key as F-Droid’s copy. That flavour can’t sign in to Google Drive for backups.
  • Its in-app updater is optional and off unless you turn it on.
  • The 11.5 MB file has native code for ARM and x86, 32- and 64-bit, needs Android 9 or later and declares 18 permissions.
