Introduction

Obtainium solves a simple problem: apps you install from outside an app store never tell you about updates. You add an app by pasting the address of its release page, and Obtainium watches it, notifies you of new releases and installs them. It’s the tool our Obtainium alternatives list is measured against.

Where it can get apps

According to the README, the supported sources include:

  • Open-source hosting: GitHub, GitLab, Codeberg and other Forgejo servers, SourceHut.
  • Repositories: F-Droid, IzzyOnDroid and other third-party F-Droid repositories.
  • Other stores and sites: Uptodown, APKPure, Aptoide, Huawei AppGallery, Samsung Galaxy Store and more. APKMirror can be tracked for new versions but not downloaded from.

The project also runs a crowdsourced list of ready-made app configurations, and supports links that import an app with one tap.

Installing without prompts

Normally Android asks you to confirm every install. Obtainium can install through Shizuku, Sui or Dhizuku instead, and with Shizuku or root it can set Google Play as the recorded install source. We found the Shizuku library in the APK.

Which build this is

Obtainium comes in two builds with different package names:

  • dev.imranr.obtainium.fdroid: this file, the F-Droid build.
  • dev.imranr.obtainium: the regular build, published on GitHub (next to an F-Droid-flavour build) and on IzzyOnDroid.

They install as separate apps and don’t update each other. This file carries the developer’s own signature: F-Droid published it only after its own build from source reproduced it. It needs a 64-bit ARM phone with Android 8.0 or later.
