Introduction

Aurora Store lets you use Google Play without the Play Store app. You search, read descriptions and reviews, and install or update apps, and the files come straight from Google Play. That makes it useful on phones without Google services, on de-Googled ROMs, and for anyone who would rather not tie app installs to their Google account.

Aurora Store doesn’t host or license any apps itself; its developers compare it to a browser for Google Play. It has no approval or affiliation from Google.

What it does

From the project’s README:

  • Anonymous login, or sign in with your own Google account.
  • Device and locale spoofing, to reach apps that are limited to certain regions or devices.
  • Exodus Privacy integration, to see the trackers in an app before you install it.
  • Plexus integration, to see whether an app works without Google Play Services or with microG.
  • An update blacklist for apps you don’t want updated, a download manager, and manual downloads of older versions if you know their version codes.

The app’s settings also offer several install methods, including a Shizuku installer, which needs Shizuku or Sui to be set up. We found the Shizuku library in the APK.

Limits

The README is upfront about them:

  • It uses a reverse-engineered Google Play API, so a change on Google’s side can break it.
  • It can’t download paid apps, and can’t update apps and games that use Play Asset Delivery.
  • Signed in anonymously, you don’t get your library, purchase history or beta programmes.
  • The server that hands out anonymous accounts isn’t always reliable, so expect occasional downtime.

About this file

This copy is from F-Droid, built from source and signed with F-Droid’s key, so it won’t update a copy from GitHub or other sources without uninstalling first. F-Droid flags it NonFreeNet, because it depends on Google Play, and Tracking. Our own scan found no known tracker SDKs in the code.

Common questions

Is this APK the official Aurora Store release?

It is F-Droid’s build rather than the developer’s own: F-Droid compiled Aurora Store 4.8.4 from the published source code and signed it with its own key. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index. Because the key is F-Droid’s, it won’t install over a copy from Google Play or GitHub without uninstalling first.

What Android version does Aurora Store need?

Android 6.0 or later (API level 23). Version 4.8.4 is built for Android 17 (target API 37). Runs on 64-bit and older 32-bit ARM phones.

Can Aurora Store access the internet?

Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 21 permissions, and 3 of them need your approval first.

Does Aurora Store contain trackers?

No known trackers: our scan of version 4.8.4 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.

Is Aurora Store open source?

Yes. Aurora Store is released under the GPL-3.0-or-later licence, and its source code is published at https://gitlab.com/AuroraOSS/AuroraStore.
