Introduction

Jitsi Meet is the open-source video conferencing project behind the free meet.jit.si service, developed by the Jitsi team at 8x8. You join a meeting by typing a room name or opening a link, and the same app works with any Jitsi server: companies, schools and individuals can run their own, and the README points to Debian packages and a Docker setup for that. This is F-Droid’s build of the Android app.

What it does

  • Meetings with video, audio, screen sharing, chat, raised hands, tile view and picture-in-picture, plus closed captions inside the chat screen, new in version 26.0.0.
  • Room security: a lobby where the host lets people in, and a room password.
  • Calendar integration: with permission, it lists your upcoming calendar events, so you can join those that contain a meeting link in one tap, and it can add a meeting link to an event.
  • Android call integration: meetings appear to Android like phone calls, so they behave properly alongside real calls. A setting turns this off.
  • Server URL: point the app at your own server in the settings; by default it uses meet.jit.si.

What it doesn’t do: there is no end-to-end encryption switch in the app (Jitsi describes E2EE as a browser feature), and recording isn’t available on meet.jit.si from this build.

The F-Droid build

F-Droid compiles the app itself, with the project’s “libre” build option and its own clean-up steps:

  • Removed: Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics, Google sign-in, Google Play services, Amplitude analytics and Giphy.
  • Analytics stay off even on meet.jit.si. That server’s configuration turns on Amplitude and RTCStats statistics, but in this build the app deletes those settings every time it loads a server configuration, and switches Giphy off.
  • Live streaming to YouTube works only by pasting a stream key, because the Google sign-in that picks a broadcast is removed.
  • Signed with F-Droid’s key, so it can’t update the Google Play version, or be updated by it, without uninstalling first.

What it connects to

The server you use: when the app opens, it loads that server’s configuration, meet.jit.si unless you change it, and meetings run through that server. Profile pictures come from Gravatar, but only for participants who have entered an e-mail address. On meet.jit.si, Jitsi’s security page says it uses analytics on its side (“We do use analytics on meet.jit.si”); the app itself doesn’t send any in this build. We found no update check.

The permissions it asks for

Camera and microphone for calls; calendar access for the meeting list; Bluetooth and audio settings for headsets; manage own calls for the call integration; and foreground services so a meeting keeps running, with screen sharing, while the app is in the background. Jitsi Meet declares 17 permissions.

About this file

  • F-Droid’s build of version 26.0.0, released in January 2026. The project has released newer mobile versions since (26.3.0 in September 2026) that F-Droid hasn’t picked up yet; this page will be checked again when it does.
  • The 19.4 MB file is for 64-bit ARM and needs Android 8.0 or later. Our scan of the app’s Java code found no trackers; the analytics libraries in its JavaScript part are switched off as described above.
  • The screenshots, from the project’s listing, date from 2018 and show menu items, such as recording, that this build doesn’t offer on meet.jit.si.
  • Jitsi Meet is licensed under the Apache-2.0. Jitsi is a trademark of 8x8, Inc.; this site isn’t connected with 8x8.

Common questions

Is this APK the official Jitsi Meet release?

It is F-Droid’s build rather than the developer’s own: F-Droid compiled Jitsi Meet 26.0.0 from the published source code and signed it with its own key. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index. Because the key is F-Droid’s, it won’t install over a copy from Google Play or GitHub without uninstalling first.

What Android version does Jitsi Meet need?

Android 8.0 or later (API level 26). Version 26.0.0 is built for Android 15 (target API 35). Needs a 64-bit ARM phone; 32-bit-only devices are not supported.

Can Jitsi Meet access the internet?

Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 17 permissions, and 5 of them need your approval first.

Does Jitsi Meet contain trackers?

No known trackers: our scan of version 26.0.0 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.

Is Jitsi Meet open source?

Yes. Jitsi Meet is released under the Apache-2.0 licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/jitsi/jitsi-meet.

Do I need an account to use Jitsi Meet?

Not to join. On the public meet.jit.si service, the person who creates a room has needed an account since 24 August 2023 (Google, Facebook or GitHub); Jitsi’s security page adds that “subsequent participants in meetings do not need to create an account.” Self-hosted servers set their own rules.

How do I change my profile picture?

Jitsi shows the picture from Gravatar, a free service, for the e-mail address you enter in the app’s settings. Jitsi’s FAQ: if you sign up for Gravatar with the e-mail address you set up in Jitsi Meet, it will show that profile photo. Leave the e-mail field empty and no picture is looked up.

How do I delete a meeting room?

You don’t need to. Jitsi’s FAQ: “Jitsi meeting rooms get deleted as soon as everyone leaves them.” To remove one from the app’s recent list, swipe it to the left.
