Introduction

Since Android 11, the system folder picker (the screen apps open when they ask you to choose a folder) refuses certain locations. You can’t select the root of the Download folder, and you can’t select the Android folder where apps keep their data. The Use this folder button is greyed out, whatever the app is.

NoStorageRestrict is an Xposed module that removes that restriction, so you can grant those folders to apps that need them, such as file managers, sync tools and backup apps.

What you need

  • Android 11 or newer. That is where the restriction started. The APK installs on older versions, but there is nothing to remove there.
  • Root and LSPosed. It is a classic Xposed module, with its entry point in assets/xposed_init.

What stands out in the APK

  • 25 KB, no permissions, no native code, no trackers.
  • No launcher icon. The manifest doesn’t declare one, so the module has no screen of its own. You enable and configure it entirely from LSPosed. That is also why its entry in our lists shows a letter instead of an icon.

Installing it

  1. Install the APK.
  2. In LSPosed, enable NoStorageRestrict and select the scope the project’s README recommends. This is the system component that provides the folder picker, and its name differs between Android versions and ROMs.
  3. Force-stop that component, or reboot.
  4. Open the app that needs the folder and pick Download or Android again. The button should now work.

Worth knowing

Google restricted these folders to stop apps from reading each other’s data. Granting an app access to the whole Android folder undoes that protection for that app, so do it only for apps you trust with everything stored there.

Common questions

Is this APK the official NoStorageRestrict release?

Yes. It is the developer’s own release of NoStorageRestrict 0.7.0, byte for byte as IzzyOnDroid distributes it. Its SHA-256 matches IzzyOnDroid’s signed index, and it is signed with the certificate IzzyOnDroid records for the app (SHA-256 551353d4e096d5d117fc322dbfed42c5ae7c8f26ac1009a13edc0f39f80b4c8c).

What Android version does NoStorageRestrict need?

Android 4.0.3 or later (API level 15). Version 0.7.0 is built for Android 15 (target API 35). Pure Java/Kotlin, so it runs on any CPU.

Can NoStorageRestrict access the internet?

No. The APK doesn’t request Android’s internet permission, so the app can’t go online by itself. In total it declares 0 permissions, and none of them needs your approval first.

Does NoStorageRestrict contain trackers?

No known trackers: our scan of version 0.7.0 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.

Is NoStorageRestrict open source?

Yes. NoStorageRestrict is released under the GPL-3.0-only licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/Xposed-Modules-Repo/com.github.dan.nostoragerestrict.
