Introduction

Video Live Wallpaper is a small Android app by codeg0blin. It uses Android’s own live-wallpaper service rather than replacing the launcher. You pick a file through the system file picker, preview the loop, and then Android opens its normal wallpaper confirmation screen.

Video and GIF controls

  • Videos and animated GIFs from local storage. GIF support was added in version 1.3.0.
  • Playback speed from 0.25× to 2×, in steps of 0.05×. The preview changes as the slider moves.
  • Fill crops the edges so the animation covers the display; Fit keeps the whole frame and may add black bars.
  • Portrait videos use the rotation information in the file, fixing the sideways or stretched result that older versions could produce.
  • The selected file is remembered across reboots through Android’s persisted file permission.

Video frames go through Android’s MediaPlayer and a small OpenGL renderer. GIFs use a decoder written in Kotlin for this project and the same renderer. That distinction matters on slower devices: decoding and drawing a wallpaper continuously consumes more battery than a still image, and a large high-frame-rate video is a heavier choice than a short low-resolution loop.

Privacy and permissions

The APK declares three permissions. Two are the old and new Android media-reading permissions; the third is an internal permission Android libraries add for the app’s own receivers. It declares no internet permission, and our code and APK scan found no advertising, analytics or tracker library.

The project says the only persistent values are the chosen file’s URI, the speed and Fill/Fit setting. Android’s file picker limits access to the file you chose; the app does not ask for broad all-files access.

About this file

  • This is version 1.3.0, added to F-Droid on 12 October 2026. It adds GIF wallpapers and fixes video rotation, playback speed failing to return to normal after moving the slider, and Fill/Fit being ignored by the preview.
  • The 5.0 MB APK runs on Android 8.0 and later and has no native libraries, so it is not restricted to one CPU architecture.
  • This is F-Droid’s build, compiled from the public source and signed with the key recorded in F-Droid’s signed index. The project also publishes an APK on GitHub; do not assume the two signatures are interchangeable without checking before switching sources.
  • The project is Apache-2.0 licensed. Its attribution file also discloses that the app’s own code was written with help from Claude and lists the AndroidX libraries used; no proprietary runtime library is included.
  • The screenshots are the project’s version 1.2.1 interface, carried in F-Droid’s signed metadata; their button still says “Choose Video”, before 1.3.0 added GIFs and changed that label.

Common questions

Is this APK the official Video Live Wallpaper release?

It is F-Droid’s build rather than the developer’s own: F-Droid compiled Video Live Wallpaper 1.3.0 from the published source code and signed it with its own key. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index. Because the key is F-Droid’s, it won’t install over a copy from Google Play or GitHub without uninstalling first.

What Android version does Video Live Wallpaper need?

Android 8.0 or later (API level 26). Version 1.3.0 is built for Android 14 (target API 34). Pure Java/Kotlin, so it runs on any CPU.

Can Video Live Wallpaper access the internet?

No. The APK doesn’t request Android’s internet permission, so the app can’t go online by itself. In total it declares 3 permissions, and 2 of them need your approval first.

Does Video Live Wallpaper contain trackers?

No known trackers: our scan of version 1.3.0 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.

Is Video Live Wallpaper open source?

Yes. Video Live Wallpaper is released under the Apache-2.0 licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/codeg0blin/video-live-wallpaper.

Can it put a video only on the lock screen?

Not through Android’s standard live-wallpaper API. The project explains that Android normally applies a live wallpaper to the home and lock screens together; some manufacturers’ system pickers may offer an extra choice, but the app cannot create it itself.

Does the wallpaper play the video’s sound?

No. Both the in-app preview and the wallpaper are muted. This app is for the moving picture, not for playing a video continuously with audio in the background.

Does it upload my video or GIF?

No. The APK has no internet permission. It keeps the local content URI that Android’s file picker grants it, plus the selected speed and scaling mode; it does not copy the media to a server.

What are the GIF limits?

Version 1.3.0 accepts GIF87a and GIF89a files up to fifty megabytes. Its own decoder loads the animation for playback; transparent pixels are drawn black, so a large or damaged GIF may be rejected even below that limit.
