Introduction

Arcticons is an icon pack made by the Arcticons Team, a community of icon designers, and started by Onno van den Dungen. Its README: “With over 15000 icons, Arcticons is one of the largest free & open source icon-packs available.” Every icon is a thin white line drawing on a transparent background, so a home screen full of different app logos turns into one consistent set. Version 15.3.2, from September 2026, has 15,322 icons, linked to nearly 50,000 app entries in its matching list.

What it does

  • Applies the icons through your launcher: the app’s dashboard has a one-tap Apply button for the launchers it knows, and instructions for others.
  • Browses all the icons, so you can check which of your apps are covered.
  • Widgets in the same line style: six clocks, a digital clock and a date.
  • Wallpapers from the project’s online collection.
  • Weather icons for Breezy Weather, which can use the pack for its icons.

You need a launcher that supports icon packs; Android’s own launcher on many phones doesn’t.

What goes online

From the 15.3.2 code, the app fetches the wallpaper list from wallpapers.arcticons.com, and a first thumbnail, each time you open its dashboard; we found no switch for this. Icon requests don’t go through a server: the app builds an email that you send yourself, and that email contains your device’s maker, model, Android version and app versions, as well as the names of the apps you picked. There is no update check and no analytics, and our scan found no trackers. The privacy policy begins: “By default, Arcticons doesn’t collect any information.”

The permissions it asks for

Seven: internet and network state for the wallpapers, setting a wallpaper, storage on older Android versions for caching and icon requests, setting alarms, which its FAQ explains is “used to launch the clock app from the clock widgets”, and changing system settings, which the dashboard library it is built on declares but this version doesn’t use.

About this file

  • This is the developers’ own build of version 15.3.2. F-Droid builds Arcticons from source, checks that the result matches the project’s GitHub release, and publishes the developer-signed file, so this file, F-Droid’s and GitHub’s update one another.
  • Google Play has the same package name, more than 100,000 downloads, built from a slightly different flavour with in-app ratings; we can’t check its key, so we can’t say whether it updates this file.
  • The 70.6 MB file has no native code, so it runs on any processor, on Android 5.0 and later.
  • Arcticons is licensed under the GPL-3.0, and its icons under CC BY-SA 4.0, which means sharing or adapting them requires credit to the Arcticons Team. The icons depict other companies’ logos, and CC BY-SA 4.0 states that “Patent and trademark rights are not licensed under this Public License.”
  • Every screenshot the project publishes is filled with other companies’ logos, so this page has none.

Common questions

Is this APK the official Arcticons release?

Yes. It is the developer-signed release of Arcticons 15.3.2 that F-Droid distributes, which F-Droid publishes only when its own build from the source code reproduces it. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index, and it is signed with the developer’s certificate (SHA-256 299bb9312e39130d0d33ed42bf98567f726ab11a04dc950c5b6c162e28c869c5).

What Android version does Arcticons need?

Android 5.0 or later (API level 21). Version 15.3.2 is built for Android 16 (target API 36). Pure Java/Kotlin, so it runs on any CPU.

Can Arcticons access the internet?

Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 7 permissions, and 2 of them need your approval first.

Does Arcticons contain trackers?

No known trackers: our scan of version 15.3.2 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.

Is Arcticons open source?

Its code is. The source code of Arcticons is released under the GPL-3.0-only licence and published at https://github.com/Arcticons-Team/Arcticons. The icons are line drawings of other companies’ app logos; CC BY-SA 4.0 covers the drawings but, in its own words, not trademark rights.

Does it work with my phone’s own launcher?

Only if that launcher supports icon packs. The project’s compatibility list includes Lawnchair, KISS, Kvaesitso, Taskbar and Hail, and lists the Pixel Launcher and the launchers of LineageOS and GrapheneOS as not supported. On those, a launcher like Lawnchair is the way to use it.

What are Arcticons Black, Material You and Day & Night?

Other editions of the same icons with their own package names, so they install side by side: Black has dark lines for light wallpapers, Material You takes its colour from your wallpaper on Android 12 and later, and Day & Night switches with the system’s light and dark mode. This page hosts the original white edition.

How do I ask for a missing icon?

From the app’s request screen, which prepares an email to the project’s request address with the apps you picked, your device model and Android version, and a ZIP file; you send it from your own email app. You can request up to 100 icons per version.

Why does it go online when I open it?

To load the list of wallpapers. Its privacy policy: “Internet permissions are only used to fetch wallpapers from our wallpaper repository.” We found no setting to turn this off.
