Introduction

From the README: “DevilutionX is a port of Diablo and Hellfire that strives to make it simple to run the game while providing engine improvements, bugfixes, and some optional quality of life features.” Diablo is Blizzard Entertainment’s action role-playing game from 1996, and Hellfire its expansion. DevilutionX replaces the game’s program; the graphics, music, sound and most of the game itself come from the data files of your own copy. The project says in the app: “DevilutionX is not supported or maintained by Blizzard Entertainment, nor GOG.com.”

Where the code comes from

DevilutionX continues Devilution, a project from 2018 that reconstructed Diablo’s source code. Its README explains how: the PlayStation version made in Japan accidentally kept “symbolic information”, normally used for debugging, and a debug build was hidden inside the PC game’s data; “After months of piecing these mistakes together, Devilution was born. I present to you a reconstructed form of Diablo’s original source code!” It isn’t Blizzard’s leaked code, but it is rebuilt from Blizzard’s program. On whether that is legal, the same README says it “falls into an entirely gray area”, as quoted in the questions above.

What it adds

On top of the original game, DevilutionX brings fixes, widescreen, and options the 1996 game didn’t have, such as health and experience bars, which are off by default. On Android it has:

  • Touch controls with an on-screen direction pad and buttons, and support for game controllers.
  • Android TV support; on a TV, the app says a gamepad is required.
  • Multiplayer over a local network or the internet, by IP address (“Client-Server (TCP)”), or over ZeroTier, a virtual network that lets players find public games (see below).
  • The Hellfire expansion, if you add its files.

What goes online

  • Language packs, without asking. When the setup screen opens and the files are missing, the app downloads, on its own, a voice pack on a phone set to Polish or Russian (about 40 or 35 megabytes), or a font pack on a phone set to Chinese, Japanese or Korean (about 59 megabytes). They come from the team’s GitHub, with no checksum check. The Polish voices are a fan recording; the Russian pack is credited only to “Stream”.
  • The demo data, only when you tap “Download Demo Data”, from the same place.
  • Multiplayer by IP: a player who hosts a game opens port 6112 on all network connections; no server of the project is involved.
  • ZeroTier, only when you choose it in the multiplayer menu: the app connects to ZeroTier’s servers and joins the team’s ZeroTier network, and its ZeroTier library may ask your router to open a port. The project’s privacy note says only: “By connecting to the ZeroTier network you allow ZeroTier to see your ISP IP address.” Code in the team’s repository for a Discord bot that lists public games on that network records player names, game names and the internet addresses of network members; we couldn’t confirm it is running.
  • There are no update checks, analytics or crash reports. Android’s own backup may include your saves, but not the game data files.

What’s inside the APK

None of Diablo’s game data files are in it: no DIABDAT.MPQ, no music, no sound. But it isn’t only the program. It also carries:

  • Two of Blizzard’s interface images, a dialog box and a small button, which match the originals pixel for pixel, so the app can show error messages before it finds your game files.
  • Panels based on the originals, such as the character sheet with its labels removed and a stash built from the inventory grid, and side extensions for widescreen loading screens that, according to the contributor who made them, were generated with Stable Diffusion from the original pictures.
  • Diablo’s text: all of the quest and character dialogue, and the original game’s credits list, are compiled into the program, and translated into its 22 languages.
  • Level layouts for some quest areas, which were moved from the reconstructed code into data files, and three arena maps made by a community member.

About this file

  • This is DevilutionX 1.5.5, from the team’s GitHub release of 30 October 2025, the latest release. The notes for Android: Import Data on the setup screen, a check that a file browser is installed, and a fix for demo and translation files being cleared each week. Other changes adjust multiplayer game speeds, guard against stash corruption and fix a crash when a TCP connection times out.
  • It is signed with Google Play’s key for the app. A maintainer: “I need to build the aab package and sign it with my publisher key in any case, and then Google will generate a signed apk that we can download and upload to the release section for the few people that prefer manually downloading an apk.” Google Play’s listing, under the team’s name, is free with no ads.
  • The file also contains 28 data and script files from the development version, which 1.5.5 doesn’t appear to use.
  • The 18.8 MB file runs on Android 5.0 and later, on ARM and x86, 32- and 64-bit, with OpenGL ES 2.0. It declares 3 permissions: internet, vibration, and storage on Android 5.1 and older. Our scan found no trackers.
  • The game text is translated into Brazilian Portuguese, about nine tenths of it; the Android setup screens only partly.
  • Open reports for 1.5.5 include a crafted save file being able to corrupt memory, so don’t load save files from strangers, and saves from development builds emptying the stash when opened in 1.5.5.
  • There are no screenshots on this page: pictures of the game show Blizzard’s artwork.
  • DevilutionX’s code is licensed under the Sustainable Use License 1.0, which is not an open-source licence: “You may distribute the software or provide it to others only if you do so free of charge for non-commercial purposes”, and “anyone who gets a copy of any part of the software from you” must also get the terms, so a copy is linked beside the download button. The README adds: “Diablo® - Copyright © 1996 Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. All rights reserved.” The repository holding the sources of the bundled art carries a CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 licence. The source code for this version is at https://github.com/diasurgical/DevilutionX/tree/1.5.5.

Common questions

Is this APK the official DevilutionX release?

Yes. It is the file from the project’s 1.5.5 release on GitHub, byte for byte, and it matches the SHA-256 checksum GitHub publishes for it. It is signed with the certificate we recorded when we first checked DevilutionX (SHA-256 f944673f7a194bc17bc690cf2fb2dc3a27967bb2add4c57d54f39096ad10843d); a release signed with a different key would not be published here.

What Android version does DevilutionX need?

Android 5.0 or later (API level 21). Version 1.5.5 is built for Android 16 (target API 36). Runs on 64-bit and older 32-bit ARM phones.

Can DevilutionX access the internet?

Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 3 permissions, and 1 of them needs your approval first.

Does DevilutionX contain trackers?

No known trackers: our scan of version 1.5.5 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.

Is DevilutionX open source?

No. Its source code is published at https://github.com/diasurgical/DevilutionX, but under the Sustainable Use License 1.0, which isn’t an open-source licence. Its code is under the Sustainable Use License, which allows free, non-commercial distribution only, and the APK also holds material from Blizzard’s Diablo: two interface images, panels based on the originals, and the game’s quest dialogue and credits text.

Do I need the original game?

Yes, for the full game: DIABDAT.MPQ from a Diablo CD or the GOG.com version, plus four more files for the Hellfire expansion. Without it, the setup screen offers “Download Demo Data”, which fetches the 1996 shareware data, where only the Warrior can be played. That download comes from the DevilutionX team’s GitHub, repackaged by them, not from Blizzard; we found no licence from Blizzard that allows others to redistribute it.

How do I get the files onto the phone?

Tap Import Data on the setup screen (new in 1.5.5) and pick the files in Android’s file picker; DevilutionX copies them into its own folder. Or, from a computer over USB, copy them to Android/data/org.diasurgical.devilutionx/files and tap “Check again”. The files stay in the app’s folder, so uninstalling the app deletes them.

Can I install it over the Google Play version?

Most likely yes. A maintainer explained that the APK on GitHub is the one Google Play generates from the team’s upload, and the file carries Google Play’s stamp, so it should have the same signature as Play’s copy, which was last updated on 30 October 2025, the day 1.5.5 came out. We haven’t tried it.

Is it legal?

The project doesn’t claim a clear answer. Devilution, the project DevilutionX grew from, rebuilt Diablo’s source code from the game itself and from debug information left on the Japanese PlayStation version; its FAQ says this “falls into an entirely gray area. The real question is whether or not Blizzard deems it necessary to take action.” We found no statement from Blizzard or GOG about it either way.
