Introduction
GitNex is an Android app for Forgejo and Gitea, the self-hostable Git services that also run Codeberg. Its README: “GitNex is a FOSS Android client (available both as gratis & paid) for the Git repository management tools Forgejo and Gitea.” and “No trackers are used”. It is made by M M Arif and actively developed; version 15.0.0 came out in September 2026.
What it does
- Repositories: browse directories and view and create files, and explore repositories, issues, organisations and users.
- Issues and pull requests, with file diffs for pull requests.
- Notifications from your server, and notes kept in the app, with several accounts on different servers side by side.
- Signing in with an access token. It also handles self-signed certificates, custom URL schemes and, since 12.0.0, servers behind a reverse proxy with HTTP basic authentication.
It manages your server through its web API; it doesn’t clone repositories to the phone.
What goes online
From the 15.0.0 code, GitNex talks to the servers of the accounts you add, and to nothing else on its own:
- Notifications are on by default: every 15 minutes a background job checks each of your accounts for new notifications, and another updates the unread count. You can switch notifications off or poll less often in the settings.
- Images linked from issues and README files load from wherever they are hosted when you open them.
- Crash reports are off by default and, when on, go only by email after you tap the notification.
There is no update check and no analytics. Links to the developer’s Patreon, translations and other apps open in your browser only when you tap them. IzzyOnDroid labels the app NonFreeNet, giving the reason “The app uses Swagger Codegen.”, a tool used to generate its API code; we found no connection to any third-party service.
The permissions it asks for
Thirteen: internet, network state and changing it, local network access for servers on your own network (Android 17 and later), notifications and vibration, starting at boot, a foreground service and a wake lock for the background notification checks, fingerprint or face for the optional app lock, access to the download manager, which this version’s code doesn’t use, and one that AndroidX adds for internal use.
About this file
- This is the developer’s own build of version 15.0.0, via IzzyOnDroid, signed by GitNex. F-Droid has carried GitNex since 2019 but builds and signs its own copy, so the two can’t update each other.
- On Google Play only the paid edition, GitNex Pro, is listed, under its own package name; in the code, Pro differs only in hiding the donation link. It installs next to this one.
- The 18.1 MB file runs on Android 8.0 and later, on ARM and x86, 32- and 64-bit.
- GitNex is licensed under the GPL-3.0. The screenshots come from its IzzyOnDroid listing.

Common questions
Is this APK the official GitNex release?
Yes. It is the developer’s own release of GitNex 15.0.0, byte for byte as IzzyOnDroid distributes it. Its SHA-256 matches IzzyOnDroid’s signed index, and it is signed with the certificate IzzyOnDroid records for the app (SHA-256 c3896336d725985196865a9f80dda402c0c3656aa908aa37d5ca6e4158a18686).
What Android version does GitNex need?
Android 8.0 or later (API level 26). Version 15.0.0 is built for Android 17 (target API 37). Runs on 64-bit and older 32-bit ARM phones.
Can GitNex access the internet?
Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 13 permissions, and 1 of them needs your approval first.
Does GitNex contain trackers?
Yes. Version 15.0.0 contains code from ACRA, which matches an Exodus Privacy tracker signature. That shows the code is bundled, not how the app uses it.
Is GitNex open source?
Yes. GitNex is released under the GPL-3.0-only licence, and its source code is published at https://codeberg.org/gitnex/GitNex.
Does it work with GitHub or GitLab?
No. GitNex talks to the Forgejo and Gitea APIs only; its login screen offers Gitea, Forgejo and Codeberg. For GitLab, the same developer makes a separate app, LabNex. Gogs, according to the FAQ, is “not tested and may not work”.
Which server versions does it need?
The 15.0.0 release notes say: “Use Forgejo 16.0.x OR Gitea 1.27.x or above.” On Android 17, reaching a server on your local network also needs the local network permission, which the login screen asks for.
Does it send crash reports?
Not unless you turn them on. Crash reports are off by default; with them on, a crash shows a notification, and only when you tap it does your email app open with the report, addressed to the developer. Our scan lists ACRA, the library that prepares these reports.
Can this file update the F-Droid or Google Play version?
No. F-Droid builds and signs its own copy, and Google Play has only the paid version, GitNex Pro, under a different package name. The FAQ: “GitNex uses different keys for end builds, such as release, release CI tag, Play Store, and F-Droid.”
