Introduction

Canta uninstalls apps, including ones the phone maker pre-installed, without root. It does this through Shizuku, calling Android’s own system functions the way adb would. We found the Shizuku library in the APK.

Our step-by-step guide, how to remove bloatware without root, covers what removal really does, how to bring an app back and what changes in Android 17. Since version 4.0.0, Canta’s setup steps point to the official Shizuku, on Google Play and on its GitHub releases page. Version 3.2.2 sent Android 12 and later to a third-party fork instead, and the project’s README still says Android 16 might need that fork; the guide explains why we suggest the official Shizuku.

How removal works

  • System apps are removed for your user only. Their APK stays on the phone, so Canta can reinstall them later, or reset them to the factory version.
  • Canta remembers what you removed, even across its own reinstalls.
  • You can require authentication before anything is uninstalled or reinstalled.
  • Some OPPO and OnePlus system apps are known to refuse uninstallation.

New in version 4.0.0

Version 4.0.0, from October 2026, rebuilt Canta so that the same code also runs as a web app. In a Chromium-based browser on a computer, it can debloat a phone connected by USB with USB debugging on. The app itself isn’t installed on the phone; instead, a small helper file is copied to the phone’s temporary folder and run over the debugging connection. The Android app gained icons in its list of uninstalled apps and works in landscape again.

Knowing what is safe to remove

Canta labels apps using the Universal Debloat List, a community list of pre-installed apps and how safe they are to remove. Apps that can break vital parts of the system are marked unsafe, and a setting controls whether you can select them at all. The labels and descriptions come from GitHub when you’re online; the project says nothing is uploaded.

The developer’s warning is blunt: removing critical system apps can cause a bootloop, after which you may have to factory reset the phone, losing your data. The app shows a similar warning. Check an app’s label before removing it.

About this file

  • This is the developer’s own build of version 4.0.0, delivered through IzzyOnDroid. Its signing certificate matches the fingerprint in the project’s README. IzzyOnDroid and F-Droid reproduced earlier versions from source; F-Droid still listed 3.2.2 when we checked.
  • F-Droid flags it because it depends on Shizuku and fetches app information from GitHub.
  • Google Play has the same app, called Canta Debloater, from the same developer.
  • The 5.0 MB file runs on ARM and x86, 32- and 64-bit, needs Android 9 or later, and declares seven permissions.
